Dear Members of the
Florida Congressional Delegation:
Right now our great State, the most popular tourist destination in the country, needs strong leadership for real solutions to getting our economy moving again. Florida’s real estate market, tourism trade and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation have always been critical components to the State’s economic engine. Simply, Florida’s idyllic destination image is inextricably linked to our future prosperity.
It concerns me greatly to see offshore drilling being discussed as a cure for the current economic slowdown. In these hard times, it is making matters worse having images of oil rigs and tankers being associated with Florida and broadcast to the world. We need solutions, right now, that will lower the price of gasoline and once again attract visitors, investors and potential residents to the Sunshine State.
America needs to forge a path of Energy Independence, yet the path proposed just doesn’t add up. I find it unacceptable that the United States is exporting petroleum in record volumes and current proposals for drilling allow all other States EXCEPT FLORIDA to opt-out of offshore drilling.
Let there be no doubt, the intense media focus about U.S. offshore drilling is attracting worldwide attention. Should oil & gas exploration move closer to Florida’s shores it will send a message: Florida has abandoned its destination image for an industrial economy. An industrial image will leave future visitors wondering if there will be tar on their favorite beach next time they visit; investors wondering if a refinery or storage facility will be approved near their investment; retirees thinking again on where to spend their golden years. This is not the future Florida deserves or the solution we need right now.
Your leadership at this critical time is vital to protecting Florida’s businesses and our State’s image. We urge you to protect Florida’s economy, renew the offshore drilling moratorium and support a National energy policy that treats Florida fairly.
